“Let’s help classify the Caracóis Procession as an intangible cultural heritage” was the motto of the campaign launched in 2022 to start the process of classifying the secular celebration of the Festivities of Nossa Senhora do Fetal, in Reguengo do Fetal, in the municipality of Batalha.
The Minicipality da Batalha and its Museum are supporting the Parish Council and the Parish of that locality in the municipality, in an action that aims to involve the entire community.
It is a fundamental condition for classification as intangible cultural heritage that the tradition/manifestation remains alive. And that’s exactly what happens in Reguengo do Fetal. The “Procissão dos Caracóis” is the event with the greatest expression, strongly involving all generations, from the preparation of the lighting sources – the snail shells, passing through the decoration and the participation in the event itself.
The secular nature of this tradition has been recorded in various documents such as photographs, videos, newspaper articles, books…. We intend to gather as many records as possible with everyone’s participation.
