International Congress of Cultural Heritage and Artistic Intervention (CIPCIA)

The Region of Leiria and Oeste occupies a long coastline 120km north of Lisbon. Its strategic location, between the two largest Portuguese cities, Porto and Lisbon, combined with the amenity, beauty and great diversity of landscapes, converged so that this land was not only a place of passage but became strategic throughout time immemorial. In a relatively small territory, the mountain coexists with long sandy areas occupied by towns and cities long constituting significant patrimonial ensembles in the national and in the international narratives. Some of these most beautiful and well-known places are Peniche, Nazaré or even São Pedro de Moel, the heart of another symbolic national element – the Pinhal de Leiria.
In this region there are imposing monuments, such as the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória (Batalha) and Monastery of Alcobaça, a World Heritage Site, among others.
In this small place, there is also the world’s most widely known altar – the Sanctuary of Fatima. And so much other cultural heritage offers this region, from the gastronomic to the musical heritage to the ethnographic heritage, etc ..
These are reasons to justify the holding of this congress. Our goal is to hold a forum, capable of bringing together the most varied national and international contributions, where reflection on cultural heritage in a globalized world is the central theme.
Within this broad theme, we are also concerned with issues related to the intervention and heritage, namely the role of artistic languages in the process of dynamization, mediation and creative and re-interpretation of the same. The relationship of individuals with their local cultural heritage and the impact of this involvement in communities can also be seen as a further object of reflection on possible processes and paths of artistic and cultural intervention.
