International Manufacturing Forum Series 2021 – 1st July 2021

The July 2021 session of the International Manufacturing Forum Series will take place next Thursday1st of July, starting from 10:00am (GMT+1), via Zoom platform.

The session theme is Digital Manufacturing on a Large Scale. Direct Digital Manufacturing is a family of technologies which is able to product products directly from a digital definition without the use of moulds or other complex tooling. These technologies directly enable the possibility of personalisation of the form of a product at the point of manufacturing. For Direct Digital Manufacturing to take its place as a major manufacturing technology, greater focus is required on the fabrication of large products, for example products with a length greater than 1m. Direct Digital Manufacturing inherently is scalable but increasing the size of the fabricated product brings other challenges such as distortions during the build process and ensuring quality control of the material composition across the whole product.

The International Manufacturing Forum Series is a major initative from the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP) of the Polytechnic of Leiria in Portugal. This is a twelve day virtual conference spread over 12 months, with a one conference held on the first thursday of each month. Each one day conference will focus on a specific topic within the broad umbrella of Manufacturing. There will be a particular emphasis on topics related to Industry 4.0 and Digital Manufacturing. CDRSP is a centre of excellence in the field of Direct Digital Manufacturing and was recently judged by an International Panel of the Foundation for Science and Technology to be the best Research Unit in the field of Mechanical Engineering and System Engineering in Portugal.
